How I Painted our High Ceilings

Our back stairway has ceilings that are about 15 feet high. I have always wanted to paint them, but I thought I would have to hire a professional to come do it for me, and who knows what that would have cost. Then one day I went to True Value to see what they had to offer in extension poles, thinking if I combined one with a tall ladder, I just might me able to attempt it myself. What I found was a total game changer!

If you have ever felt overwhelmed with the thought of painting your high ceilings, then I'm here to tell you, you can do it by yourself. Yes you can! I did!

And this is how:

I went to True Value and picked up this extension rod that goes up to 12 feet high. I was not even aware that they made these so long, did you? I'm sure you can find something similar at any hardware store, but this affiliated link to Amazon is the exact one I picked up.

All I had to do was attach my roller brush to the extension rod and paint. I'll admit, it was a bit awkward since I was in a tight space. It required that I load my roller up with paint in another room, bring it to the stairwell, push the rod up to the heighth I needed and then paint. Even though it was awkward, I got the hang of it after a while. And in the end, it was worth the extra work.

However, a roller brush can't paint into the corners, or cut in around light fixtures.

So I came up with the idea of duct taping my paint brush onto the extension rod and it worked great.

This alowed me to get into all of the corners and carefully paint around the light fixtures. You may have noticed how dusty my light fixtures are, I was never able to reach them before, but now I think I'll just duct tape a duster onto my new extension rod to clean them up. 😉 This extension rod has become my new favorite thing.

I am beyond excited to have this back stairway painted, especially since before I didn't think it would ever get done. In case you are interested, this color is called North Star by Sherwin Williams.

I'm still working on getting this area finished up, I have plans to hang up some hooks and then I'll be headed down to paint our basement.
