Add Garden-Share.com the survey its 27,688 professional and recreational gardeners, 20.6 percent of respondents said "crop" is the most popular garden trend . " Small-Space Gardening " by 17.1 per cent and "Organic Gardening" was 16.3 percent.

"crop chosen has selected a surge in popularity due to the economy, the price of gas and concerns of consumers about the origin of the foods that they enjoyed eating," says John Mitchell, founder of Garden-Share.com. "In addition, the personal satisfaction you get your own food grows and it is no wonder, crop is the most popular trend." Other findings include:

  • 43.6 percent answered that "yes, you can save money from vegetables, fruit and herb gardening." Another 28.2 percent said "it does not matter, it's nice."
  • 56.9 percent said tomatoes, though technically a fruit, their are " favorite vegetables to grow." At 8.1 percent, peppers were second.
  • Basil of 35.6 was chosen percent as "grow favorite herb ." Rosemary at 12.2 percent and chives to 8.0 percent were other favorites.
  • berries were 31.4 percent as "picked popular fruit to grow ." Apples chosen by 6.7 percent and citrus by 5.2 percent.
  • 45.8 percent of respondents cited " relax and enjoy " as the main reason for gardening. 25.8 percent chose " garden for beauty and decoration ."

"can I relate to these findings," says Mitchell. "As a gardener, I typically after the season. Spring is conditioned in the air and the survey results clearly show that there is a lot of activity."
